Why convert JPG to WebP?
WebP is a modern image format that many websites use for their images. Converting JPG photos to WebP can make them lighter for the web while keeping them looking good.
You choose the quality; the dimensions stay exactly as they are.
What to know before converting JPG to WebP
- Often smaller, not always: At a similar visual quality, WebP files are frequently smaller than JPG. How much depends on the image, the quality setting and the browser's encoder, and sometimes the WebP is not smaller at all.
- Another round of lossy compression: Your JPG was already compressed. Converting to WebP compresses it again, so keep the quality reasonably high if detail matters.
- Check where you will use it: Current browsers display WebP, but some older programs and upload forms only accept JPG or PNG.
Choosing the quality
Start with the default of 80 and compare original and result side by side. If you see blocky areas or smeared detail, raise the quality; if the file is larger than you hoped, try a lower value or use Compress Image with a size target.
Your images stay on your device
The conversion runs in your browser; your image is not uploaded. Images larger than 40 megapixels are not supported, because they would exceed what a browser tab can safely handle.

How do I convert JPG to WebP?

Will WebP always be smaller than JPG?
No. It often is at a similar quality, but not in every case. The result panel shows both sizes so you can decide whether the WebP is worth using.
Does converting to WebP lose quality?
Our WebP output uses lossy compression, so some detail can be lost, as with any re-compression. At the default quality the difference is usually hard to see.
Can I use WebP images everywhere?
Current web browsers support WebP. Some older software, print services and upload forms still expect JPG or PNG, so check before replacing your originals.
