How to compress an image to 1 MB

Why 1 MB?
1 MB is a comfortable size: large enough to keep a photo looking good even on big screens, but a fraction of what modern phones and cameras produce.
It suits online portals with a 1 MB limit, slides and documents that include photos, and larger images on websites.
When 1 MB is the right size
- Online portals: Uploads for applications, claims or listings with a 1 MB maximum.
- Presentations and documents: Photos inside slides or reports keep the file easy to share.
- Large website images: Full-width photos and galleries that should still look crisp.
What happens if the image is too large?
The tool first lowers the quality step by step and keeps the highest quality that fits. If even a reasonable quality is not enough, it reduces the dimensions proportionally, so nothing is stretched or cropped. The result is always 1 MB or less.
Most photos reach 1 MB by lowering the quality only, with their original dimensions intact. Very large camera images may be scaled down a little.
For very small targets and very large images there is a limit: if the image would have to become too small to be useful, the tool tells you instead of producing an unusable file.
Image quality at 1 MB
At 1 MB, the difference to the original is hard to spot for most photos. Only very large, highly detailed images may show slight softness when you zoom in closely.

JPG, PNG and WebP. The compressed file keeps the format of your original. PNG is lossless, so it can only get smaller by reducing its dimensions; JPG and WebP also have a quality setting.
Your images stay on your device
Compression runs in your browser. Your image is not uploaded or stored anywhere. Very large images (over 40 megapixels) are not supported because they would exceed what a browser tab can safely handle.

How do I compress an image to 1 MB?

Will I see a difference after compressing to 1 MB?
Usually not on a normal screen. 1 MB leaves plenty of room for detail. The preview shows original and result side by side, so you can check before downloading.
Is 1 MB small enough for presentations?
Yes, for most slide decks. Photos at 1 MB still look sharp when projected, and a presentation with many photos stays much easier to email or upload than one with full-size originals.
Will the result be exactly 1 MB?
No. You get 1 MB or less. The tool looks for the highest quality that fits within the limit.
What if my photo is already under 1 MB?
Then you do not need to compress it. The tool says so and offers the original for download, untouched.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your image is compressed by your own browser and never sent to our server. Nobody else sees it, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
